Nigrescence Model of Racial Identity Development Essay -- Psychology

In 1971, William E. Cross, Jr., Ph.D., a non-white psychologist and prominent researcher (specializing in Black psychology) developed a framework for assessing how black Americans come to understand what it means to be Black. Dr. Cross introduced his ideologies as the Nigrescence Model of Racial Identity Development. He asserts that every black American must undergo a series of identity stages to develop a healthy and balanced understanding of the Black capture and become well-rounded in our global society. This model encompasses five stages of identity development, which Dr. Cross emphasizes, must be performed in order to successfully accomplish this goal. The early stage of Black racial identity development refers to the pre-encounter stage. This depicts the juncture in life when a black American displays a lack awareness of his/her let race and is uninterested in racial differences (to include those that affect Blacks). This stage delineates two types of identities, namely the anti-Black and assimilation compacts. The anti-Black pre-encounter stage represents a cluster of black Americans that piss pride in White standards, values, and beliefs they view the White race and culture as emblems of beauty and perfection. These people hold a high level of wickedness for the Black race and openly expresses their opinion on the matter. In contrast, the assimilation pre-encounter stage represents a cluster of black Americans that exhibits low salience for being Black. This cluster does not blatantly express hate for the Black race, however, they prefer to identify themselves with being something other than black Americans. They embrace color blindness and maintain a race-neutral demeanor towards humanity. Whether classified within ... ...of many concepts forwarded by academicians that inaccurately assesses identity development. Dr. Cross conceptualized theories are oversimplified, as they implicate all black Americans as integrate in their upbringing family s tructure values systems, beliefs, economic status, level of education, and exposures to racial indifference which is clearly inaccurate. Simplistic models of this sort exclude an individuals experiential background, which provides important variables to consider when assessing ones comprehension of what it means to be black. Further, Dr. Cross model failed to explicate a connection between identity and mental functions. It is vitally important that we suspend these types conceptual theories that label and classify our experiences, and develop accurate psychological theories that encompasses all variables that makes us who we are.

Malcolm X Essay -- History

Malcolm XMalcolm X, a civil rights leader in the 1960s believed that blacks and whites should be segregated. He also believed that white man was evil and were exhausting to brainwash all blacks and that Martin Luther Kings non-violent protests werent working and that violence was needed for change. Malcolm Xs life was a life with a make out of conflict and violence in it. Malcolm X was innate(p) under the name of Malcolm Little in Omaha, Nebraska in 1925. His father was a baptist minister and an outspoken follower of Marcus Garvey, the black nationalist leader of the twenties who preached that all blacks should leave the US and go back to Africa. While Malcolms father was away and Malcolms mother was pregnant with Malcolm, a group of KKK members came to their house and told Mrs. Little to get down out her husband. She came out of the house and stood where all the KKK could see that she was pregnant and told them that Mr. Little was in Milwaukee preaching. The KKK, disappointed, sh outed threats and told them to leave town. After this they broke every window in the Littles home and left. When Mr. Little came home and heard what happened, he decided to move as soon a Malcolm was born to Lansing, Michigan. Here was where Malcolms father died at the turn of the Black Legion (X 4- 13). After Malcolms fathers death, his mother who had to take care of eight children and endure threats from the KKK, suffered a nervous breakdown. As a result, Malcolm and his siblings were taken by the social welfare department. Malcolm was later enrolled in a reform school and did very well grade wise. He was the best student in his class and wanted to pay off a lawyer. When the school heads heard about this, they sent a person to talk to Malcolm. This person told and convinced Malcolm that he was black and that he could never capture a lawyer because of it. As a result, he dropped out of after the eighth grade and moved to Boston, Massachu bewilderts where he worked several diffe rent jobs. Soon, Malcolm became associated in a gang and sold and used drugs, and was involved in many other criminal activities. His gang career ended when he got into some perplexity due to a bet with the gang leader. Since the gang wanted Malcolm killed, Malcolm hid for a while. Soon, Malcolm decid ed to rob a house which he heard had a lot of valuables in it. Soon one night, he robbed the house, but was ca... ...e didnt believe the peaceful protests worked. Malcolm believed that violence was the only way through which change would take place. Finally, Malcolm disagreed with Mr. King in the fact that Malcolm wanted to segregate blacks and whites and create a separate place for the blacks to live in while Mr. King wanted to end segregation and exact blacks and whites live peacefully. My opinions toward Malcolm Xs beliefs are that I disagree with most of what he said. I believe that what he taught was teaching hatred. I also believe that he set the civil rights movement back bec ause he un-did everything Mr. King stood for and did. I also disagree with his idea of usage of violence because I dont believe it solves or is the act to anything. Finally, I believe his ideas towards white men being devils and evil seem to be unjustified. I say unjustified because many white men assay to join both the OAAU and the Nation of Islam, were denied. My logic is that if the white men were evil, why would they try to join them and help them? Although I disagree with most of Malcolms Xs beliefs, I do agree that all Blacks should join and become unified, because in unity, there is power.

Free Essay on Nathaniel Hawthornes The Scarlet Letter - Lasting Effect of Sin :: Scarlet Letter essays

Lasting Effect of Sin The Scarlet Letter   Puritan society placed great importance upon a persons reputation. Without an honorable reputation a person is not worthy of respect from others in their society. Characters in this novel go through their lives struggling with themselves trying to contend with the guilt and shame associated with their actions. In Nathaniel Hawthornes novel, The Scarlet Letter, he shows the relentless effect that sin has on Hester and Dimmesdale.   Hester Prynnes guilt is the result of her committing adultery, which has a profound effect on her life. Hester is publicly seen with the scarlet letter when she first emerges out of the cold dark prison. It had the effect of a spell, taking her out of the ordinary relations with humanity and enclosure her in a sphere by herself (Hawthorne 49). The spell that is mentioned is the scarlet letter, so fantastically embroidered and illuminated upon her bosom (Hawthorne 49). The scarlet letter is what isolat es her from everyone else because it symbolizes sin. Hester is in her very profess sphere, a world of her own where her sin effects her livelihood and has completely isolated her from the world. Her entrance into the sphere marks the beginning of her guilt, it occurs when she is in the prison later on her first exposure to the crowd-her moral agony reflected in the convolutions that have seized the child her pride, her daring (Bloom 34). The prison marks the beginning of a new life for Hester, a life full of guilt and isolation. Her moral agony (Bloom 34), is her guilt that is slowly surfacing while she faces the crowd realizing that she has been stripped of her pride and everything that was important to her in the past. The lasting effect of Hesters sin is the guilt that she now embodies due to her commiting adultery. The guilt that is associated with Hesters sin remains with her as an everlasting reminder of her sinful actions (Bloom 34). Guilt is a proceeds of sin that Hester has to endure throughout her life. Hesters guilt begins starts to have a profound effect on her life and thinking.   Hesters guilt has become very influential in her life making her unable to express herself freely. Hester Prynne might have repaid them all with a bitter and disdainful smile. But under the leaden infliction which it was her objurgate to endure, she felt at moments as if she must needs (to) shriek (Hawthorne 52-53).

A Feminist Reading of John Updikes A&P Essay -- John Updike A&P

A Feminist Reading of A&P Gone are the days that humans could live impulsively, barely taking physical pain and pleasure into account when making decisions. Or so one would like to believe. In a display of sheer honour and ignorance, Sammy, a grocery clerk at the A & P, managed to revert back to the original behavior patterns of his ape-like ancestors. One cannot possibly predict the future of Sammy, given his knowledge illogical and irrational behavior. But one can, through a careful examination of Sammys life, determine that Sammy is just a naive, young man whose impulsive acts, partially as a consequence of his upbringing, compel him to participate in a cause not worth fighting for, instead of using his talents for more reconstructive purposes. No matter how much Sammy tried, he could not transcend the rational barriers of his evolutionary counterpart, the ape. From the moment that Sammy first gazed upon those three young women in bathing suits to his fusillade and subsequen t resignation, Sammy was not able to separate reason from basic finish upual instinct. Sammy first makes the comment, The longer her neck was, the more of her there was, (Updike 408) and later says, From the third schedule I look straight up this aisle to the meat counter, and I watched them all the way (Updike 408). After hours--perhaps tear put down years--of being deprived of the sight of a beautiful girl, Sammy gave in to the natural animal tendency to observe and pursue a member of the opposite sex. It was of no consequence to Sammy that he did not even know the three girls and had not seen very much of them. Sammys only overriding desire was, simply put, sex. Sammy made no effort to rationally think nearly what he was doing instead, he acted on an impulse stemmin... ...ions were divulged, and Sammy began to really realize what he was doing, his actions became more noble. One can learn from Sammy the importance of not backing down once decisions are made, and to stand up for ones own opinions despite what other people think. If one can disregard Sammys initial ape-like motives which stressed the importance of the sex drive, there is much to be learned from that now-eminent grocery clerk. If people finally decide to stand up for what they believe, themselves and the world indubitably be bettered. And then, the world would overhaul less rampant with people who appear to have missed their fair share of natural selection, and the world would be a much more spiritually sound place. Thomas v. Indiana Employment Security

Whether the States denial of unemployment honorarium benefits to the petitioner, who terminated his job because his phantasmal spirits require him from participating in the production of armaments, constituted a violation of his First Amendment right to bump exemplar of organized religion Facts Petition doubting Thomas was a shapers witness who worked at the Blaw-Knox Foundry & Machinery Co. He was initially hired to work in the roll foundry until he was transferred to another department that make turrets for military tanks.Since his main function was related to the production of weapons he asked that he be transferred to another department. Having found out that all of the remaining departments at Blaw-Knox were weapons related he asked for a lay-off from his company. When this was denied, he quit from his job arguing that he could not work on weapons without violating the principles of his religion. After leaving his employment he asked for unemployment compensation from th e atomic number 49 Employment Security.During his hearing, he state that he view that contributing to the production of arms violated his religion. The hearing referee concluded that Thomas religious belief precluded him from producing or aiding directly in the manufacture of items used in warfare. The referee however denied him his benefits on the ground that his termination from employment was not ground on good cause in connection with his work as required by the inch statute. The Board adopted the referees ruling and denied the benefits. On appeal, the Indiana Court of Appeals reversed the decision of the board and ruled that the subject Indiana statute improperly burdened Thomas right to free illustration his religion. The Supreme Court of Indiana vacated the decision of the Court of Appeals and denied Thomas his benefits Decision The States denial of unemployment compensation benefits to petitioner violated his First Amendment right to free exercise of religion Reasons/Ra tionale In arriving at this conclusion, the Supreme Court first had to answer the question whether Thomas indeed quit his employment due to religion. It is well-settled that exclusively beliefs rooted in religion are protected by the unloosen Exercise Clause. According to the Supreme Court, the determination however of what is a religious belief or practice is more often than not a difficult and delicate task. The Supreme Court found that Thomas resigned from employment because he thought that production of arms violated his religion. In this case, the referee had found that Thomas quit his employment due to his religious convictions. This was affirmed by the Review Board. The Indiana Supreme Court however concluded that Thomas had merely made a personal philosophical choice rather than a religious choice. It mustiness be stressed that religious belief is not reduced to a philosophical choice merely because on that point are differences among the faithful in their definition of t heir scripture. The fact therefore that a colleague did not consider production of weapons as a serious violation of their religions should not affect Thomas designer for quitting his employment. It is also immaterial and insignificant if the faithful is having difficulty articulating his views. The free exercise of religion protected by the First Amendment is not limited to beliefs which are dual-lane by all of the members. Having disposed of the first question, the second question is whether the statute violated the free exercise of religion by Thomas. According to the Supreme Court, it is well-settled that when the kingdom requires that certain conduct is mandated by a religious faith be first complied with before a benefit is received or when it denies such a benefit because of failure to comply with such conduct, the state is in effect placing a burden upon religion. In this case, if we are to uphold the interpretation given on the Indiana statute then we are in effect stating that the employee should not resign for religious grounds otherwise he will not be entitle to benefits. Although the compulsion exercised by the state in this case is indirect, the infringement upon free exercise is nonetheless substantial. This however does not mean that the state cannot restrict the free exercise of religion. If there are more compelling interest which could justify the state from restricting the free exercise of religion then the burden whitethorn be allowed. The ends, however, do not justify the means. In this case, the reasons behind the enactment of the statute do not justify violation of the free exercise of religion. there is no evidence that will prove that the number of people who find themselves in the predicament of choosing between benefits and religious beliefs is large enough to create general unemployment or even to seriously affect unemployment which is feared by the lower courts. There is therefore no interest more important than the free exercis e of religion.Neither is there any merit on the argument that to compel the payment of benefits to Thomas will amount to fostering a religious faith. The grant of benefits given to Thomas is a mere affirmation of the obligation of the state to become neutral in matters of the religious faith of the people. Dissenting Opinion of Justice Rehnquist Justice Rehnquist declared that the conclusion of the majority that the State of Indiana is constitutionally required to provide direct financial assistance to a person solely because of his religious beliefs very adds mud to the already muddied waters of the First Amendment.According to him this declaration of the majority is clearly erroneous as it does not resolve the tension between the Free Exercise Clause and the Establishment Clause of the constitution. It is the contention of Justice Rehnquist that the majority read the Free Exercise Clause too broadly. Although it upheld the free exercise of religion by Thomas, it however in effect violated the requirements of the Establishment Clause by preferring religion over another.

Fahrenheit 451 Symbolism-the River Essay

In Ray Bradburys Fahrenheit 451, Montags escape done the river svmbolizes his salvation, a yearn with several different things. . In several other instances besides the river, water is utilize to contrast fire and to thus show the difference between good and evil. Also, the forest through which the travels river typeizes the innocence of mankind before civilization. This is merely a scaratch on the surface of this novels seemingly endless symbol. Fahrenheit tells the figment of a firefighter named Montag whose job is to set fire to books in order to maintain societys ignorance. When Montag kills Beatty, the Fire Chief, he decides to run from the world that he has lived his whole deportment in. His new set friend Faber, a nonher person on the outskirts of society, tells him that he will be safe if he makes it to the river. This is an illustration of literal salvation. Rivers often represent portend emmissaries, life, and the enterance into the afterlife (Jobes 1341). After a long time of floating Montag knew he must never burn again (Bradbury 141). This shows that the river channels Montag or is at least the cocoon in which he stays while he undergoes a metamorphisis into what is basically a different person. Also, it is interesting that, in the old South as healthful as in Biblical times, the baptisms of new Christians often would take place in the nearest river or creek.Montags journey in the river seems to be a baptism of sorts, as it frees him from the shackles and chains of his former life. The river, however, is only the vessel in which Montag travels to the heart of the forest. The forest is the abode of man in his state of innocence, and a Hebrew symbol for kingdom (Jobes 594). In the novel, the forest and the river are likened to one another at times, such as when Montag describes the forest floor as a dry river odour of hot cloves and warm dust (Bradbury 144). When Montag several men who, like him, are on the outside of society looking in, t hey are at the old railway tracks tht cut through the heart of the forest like a rusty dagger wielded by the filthy hand of industry. It is here that he finds his real redemption. The river is not the only use of water as symbolism in Fahrenheit 451. Water symbolizes baptism, cleansing, resurrection, and is a source of both good and evil (Jobes 167). Water is used on numerous occasions to contrast with fire, wich is representative of divine love, fervor, and life, but also divine anger, destuction, and death (Jobes 571).Usually, they contrast good and evil, and although fire is generally associated with evil, its symbolism begins to change toward the end of the novel When Montag sees the fire the men in the forest are using to warm themselves, he realizes he has never thought in his life that fire can give as well as take (Bradbury 147). The fire is a metaphor for Montag he finally realizes that he can change the world for the better instead of for the worse.Ray Bradburys novel offe rs a rich tapestry of symbolism to all those who read it.Bradbury weaves a seemingly endless amount of symbols into his story in a way that is wonderfully eloquent, distinctly American, and easily accessible to the casual reader. His passionate cry against censorship and engaging story has enthralled readers for the past 50 years. He uses symbolism to help get his point across, and thus makes the story work on a deeper level. Through symbolism, Bradbury has found a way to affect the reader in the very core of their being, and he has made this novel one whose jarring imact stays with the reader long after they have turned he final page.

To have anformer(a) language is to possess a jiffy soul. said Charlemagne, which may sound identical a clich but is actually very accurate. Firstly, I strongly believe that the language we learn directly affects our appearance of thinking as we start to think in that particular language. For example Turkish is my mother tongue and I am learning English as a endorsement language, so I know that there s not exact translation for most of the words from Turkish to English. In this situation if I think like a Turkish, I go forth probably be misunderstood and cannot state my ideas clearly. So I have to think like an American when I am speaking English to appropriately express my thoughts. This way I will have a different way of thinking of a different subtlety and I can get to know that culture better.I think this experience ives me a second identity, and this second identity diversifies the way I look at the things as well as my knowledge. In other words, I become a different person than I was before I learned that particular language. The other benefit of learning a second language is obviously being able to communicate with many people. Especially when a person is learning a widely spoken language like English or Spanish, it becomes a lot easier to get to know other people from different countries nd cultures.Additionally learning foreign languages provides huge benefits when it comes to the career, as it is a necessity to know foreign languages to apply for a Job or to work abroad. In conclusion learning a new language will expand our knowledge of the world as we have the mentality of a foreign culture while speaking that language and we gain a second identity with that experience. And of course new languages provide us to get to know more people and contribute to our success.

The Human Vessel to the New Business Frontier

As our workforces grow more than diverse every day, and customers are demanding better, faster, and less dearly-won service, companies are faced with the challenges to take a crap and meet the convinces necessary to remain in business. The organisational environment must also learn to assess the direction of these converts while also being able to respond undefeatedly to those that roll in at a completely different direction than expected. The leadinghip required to divvy up these wonderfully tumultuous times, so that organizations in transition remain profitable, is crucial.Todays companies become successful based on their abilities to create and manage motley. They can no womb-to-tomb survive without heroism and predilection the courage to challenge prevailing business models and the imagination to invent new markets. As the globe continues to grow into a marketplace with vanishing boundaries, competition becomes stronger, tighter, and smarter than ever before, ul timately forcing organizational change. The tidal strength of competition that has been upon us over the past few decades has fundamentally changed the blueprints of m any corporations and how they straightway need to be led.Businesses restrain rouse to the hard fact that attractership can no longer be defined by the efficacious management of race and systems, precisely most importantly by the effective leading of change. Leadership, or the leave out thereof, is proving to be one of the most crucial determinants of whether organizations impart survive and flourish in the beside atomic number 6s business take careier. We live in an era of organizational reengineering. To become or remain militant, draws often must palpableize improvement through radical change, or reengineering. As defined by Jon R. Katzenbach, author of Real Change Leaders, radical changes are Those situations in which corporate performance requires most bulk throughout the organization to learn new b ehaviors and skills. These new skills must add up to a competitive advantage for the enterprise allowing it to produce better and better performance in shorter and shorter time frames. The changes that are most relevant are those that demand companies to redefine their organizations in order to profit from the changes or even unspoilt to endure them.Change, such as that which comes with new technology, comes so quickly and frequently that business are hale to develop new organizational models and practices. With the unrelenting evolution of technology, organizational structures have had to be createed. No longer do we find the centralized, multi-layered hierarchies that once offered organizations bureaucratic control over employees. Towering organizational structures are now collapsing into flatter pyramids with wider spans of control offering greater flexibility, cost-efficiency, and more interdependent departments capable of rapid action and reaction. As with advances in techno logy, economic, political, and socio-cultural environments are also faced with swift changes. Unfortunately, such a rapid rate of change can turn an organizations strengths into its weaknesses. Leaders must now think like change agents, because the issue is not only how new concepts and skills are acquired, but also how to unlearn things that are no longer serving the organization. This means that leaders must carefully examine organizational cultures and then reinvent them to promote and maintain success. The most important thing to understand, however, is that leaders cannot change culture arbitrarily in the sense of eradicating dysfunctional conditions. By evolving culture they can build on its strengths while diminishing its weaknesses. conclusion is changed through changes in various key concepts in the mental models of people who are the main carriers of the culture. Note, however, that such transformations do not occur through announcements or formal programs. They occur thr ough a honest change in the leaders behavior If culture cannot be manipulated through hard-core insurance policy changes and formalities, how does a leader gain the loyalty of the organizations members? How does a leader warp others to voluntarily commit to his or her visual modality of where the company is release and how it testament get there? Robert Rosen, instigateant clinical professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the George Washington School of Medicine tells us that Americans are sharp-set for new leaders emotionally intelligent leaders with vision and character who can guide their downsized organizations corroborate to health and high performance. However, before they are willing to go through the growing pains of organizational changes, employees want to and must see that the leader is willing to walk the talk The path of a leader is one of a trailblazer. Forging new ideas, concepts, and theories to raise the success level of those he or she is leading . end-to-end history, there have been many leaders who have fundamentally changed the way the world viewed things such as freedom, politics, and the importance of forgiveness. These magnetic individuals are able to draw out not only their own magnificence, but also that of those who follow them.Within their skills to lead, they cultivate others abilities to rise above their difficulties and self-doubts. Leaders of truly positive change can breath life back into an organization that is on the edge of collapsing. With their abilities to instill values that think over courage and respect in their followers, they also are more than willing to share in their visions for the future. If a leader truly wants to transform an organization that can and will endure the inevitable changes that the future holds, he or she must work to unify its members by building a shared vision with plebeian values and direction.Vision is an essential element of leadership. It is a leaders image of what the company will produce or provide, where the company is headed to achieve those successes, and how it will arrive there. Vision refers to a picture of the future with some implicit or explicit commentary on why people should strive to create that future. It is also the intuitive ability to see the potential in or necessity of opportunities right in front of you. Vision is necessary to clarify the necessity and actions of organizational changes. When people understand why they are going in a certain direction and they fundamentally agree with it, they are much more prompt and willing to put in the work it takes to see a leaders vision materialize. the real power of a vision is unleashed only when most of those involved in an enterprise or military action have a common understanding of its goals and direction. When a journalist inquired about the remarkable success of the Hewlett-Packard corporation, David Packard talk only in terms of the ttributes of immense operating freedom within well-defined objectives, the pay-as you-go policy that enforces entrepreneurial discipline, the critical decision to enable all employees to share in the companys financial success. These organizational attributes are not just ingenuous choices made to see if the organizations members would use them to assist the company in its successes they are carefully thought out plans that began as someones vision as to how the company could flourish through its people. To companies whose leaders mobilize their people and unleash their competence, creativity, and commitments, success is close sure to follow. Once a leader has formed, articulated, and shared with the other members of the organization his or her visions for the future, those other people will be watching very closely to see just how much conviction the leader has in those visions. They expect leaders to show up, to pay attention, and to participate directly in the process of getting extraordinary things done.Leading by example is how leaders make visions and values tangible. It is how they provide the evidence that they are person-to-personly committed. That evidence is what people look for and admire in leaders, people whose direction they would willingly follow. This makes credibility a very important attribute that people look for in a successful leader. Those looking to a leader need to believe in that person that he or she can be trusted that he or she is truly excited about the direction that the companys heading.the great unwashed expect their leaders to stand for something and to have the courage of their beliefs. It is also equally as important for the leader to know that his or her credibility is not being challenged. Leaders believe their personal credibility is more important than their formal position of power. Credibility is what they think enables them to inspire confidence among the people they must influence to take initiative and personal risk. The best leaders show their per sonal credibility both in what they have accomplished and in what they know about the change task at hand.Courage is another(prenominal) primary attribute of a successful leader. One of the greatest challenges for leaders of change is to develop the personal skills that are necessary to effectively generate and cultivate courage, in themselves as well as those slightly them. They recognize that courage is really about making the connection between whats changing in the business world and what needs to change in their personal behaviors. They also recognize that personal change offers far more potential rewards than sticking with the status quo. As the hallmark of a true leader, courage is necessary to take risks, to create a vision, to empower others, and to challenge the current conditions of any situation. In The stratagem of War, Sun Tzu said Leadership is a matter of intelligence, trustworthiness, humanness, courage, and sternness. The most essential aspect of how the leaders of the next century will sustain their companies is the continual facilitation of the people within their organizations as the primary factor for success.Although empowerment has become somewhat of a buzz word within the business arena, its power is stock-still stronger than any other tool used by leaders to get results from people. Because in its most simple form, empowerment is sharing the decision-making process with others, it is closely related to courage. Those companies that have stood the test of time, such as Hewlett-Packard, Motorola, Nordstrom, and Wal-Mart have infused into their organizations the practices of empowering their employees.Leaders of the future must have the strength and fearlessness to go against the grain of old assumptions or paradigms. They must continue to trailblaze in their efforts to see that the organizations of the next century will remain in tact. They will be the encouragers of change for positive results they will be the beacons that the othe rs look to guide the ship through any storm they will hold their heads high in recognition of success and have the courage to occupy when outcomes are not what they had planned. Tomorrows leaders of change rise to the occasion and take the others with them.

I have the feeling of being on top of the world and that theres no subject that discount stop me. Its great to have a passion that makes you feel like this. Im lucky to have one.During the time that most of people like to spend drinking warm tea and reading a novel, Im cruising through snow, both my legs strapped to a wide plank of woodwind and fiberglass, practicing sport bonkn as snowboarding. Writing this essay helped me to realize that I havent elect this hobby by a coincidence. Both of the characteristics of this sport changed the world history. Events like the French revolution of 1789 or the uprisi ng in the Jewish ghetto in Warsaw in 1943, would not have happened if people hadnt had courage and belief in granting immunity.Courage. Many people who know me well say, that I have courage. I come from a family of entrepreneurs. I was raised in this spirit by my entrepreneurial parents who had prodigious honour for hard work. I learned that hard work go forth invariably be rewarded. I helped in my familys business, since I turned 14 and I learned the pros and cons of having your own business. Even though the disadvantages seemed big to me at that time, as an only child I knew that I would run the business one day. By the time I turned 18, I was fully at peace with this idea. Its hard to estimate how big my shock was when one year later my father got a brain cancer and passed outside and a year later our self-built family company. The shock was big and lasted long but I knew one thing I had no plan and I needed one. I put myself together and made a new plan studying, developi ng myself, investing in what my father used to say nobody will ever be able to take away from you which is knowledge. Where I am today, doing what I do is the resolvent of that experience and my patience, persistence and hard work. Freedom.During an exchange programme for students, we played a game in which for each one of us had to choose 3 words representing our values. Surprisingly I had no problem to choose the soma one independence. I found that amazing to discover, that freedom was more important to me than things like family, which was the bit two, love, not to mention career or development. Even today I know that only through freedom can I achieve all the other values that are important to me. It organizes my priorities and my moral system. Its the freedom of my own choices and the freedom of always standing for what I gestate in.Moreover, it is also about honesty and respect to other people, which are my personal code of conduct. And when necessary it is the freedom to give up some of our freedom out of love and respect for others. Courage and all the notions of freedom described above are helping me to be successful in business. I am always a promoter of honesty and transparency in the workplace, as well a big takeoff booster of the sustainable development agenda. What makes it different but not less exiting than my sport activities, is the fact that I adoptt have to do it in minus ten degrees Celsius

Once Upon a Time Essay

formerly Upon a Time, was written by Gabriel Okara, who is a Nigerian poet. He often explains what happens when a traditional African culture meets the forces of the Western way of life. I think the numbers was written to outline the fix per parolealities of many wad and to try and get them to return to a natural and innocent state. The poem tells of the converse between what seems to be a father and son, where the father wants to learn from his son how to go back to northward and no longer be fake. The poem starts by the father telling his son how, once upon a time, people, or they, utilize to laugh with their hearts. I think that the word they refers to western people who are white. Also this description gives the impression of genuine emotion given off by the people. He accordingly moves on to say that now they only, laugh with their teeth, plot of ground their ice-block cold eyes search fuck his shadow. This gives off very negative, fake and false feelings and it is a ve ry cold description. This affects the tone of the poem that now becomes sinister and bitter.Stanza two then reveals to a greater extent of the past when it is said that, they used to shake custody with their hearts, again this image reveals true and genuine emotion. But just as in the primary Stanza the present reality is then discussed when it is said that, that has gone, now they only shake hands without hearts while their left hands search his empty pockets. This destines that, again the people are fake and seem to be using the man to see what they can get. Poem Stanza Four Presents the Adaptations and Solutions. Stanza three then goes to explain more about the changes he has noticed in these false people.Again the Stanza starts positive with the phrases, feel at root, come again, but then goes on to say that he will come again, once, twice but there will be no more thrice for then I materialize doors shut on me. This shows that the people lie when they say the positive phr ases and after a few visits they consent all that they want from the man their falseness is reflected in the language they use. The first three Stanzas have the equal structure. They start by telling the past and explaining how things used to be, but then they tell the negative reality.I think this is used to compare the times and introduce the reader to the situation. Stanza four presents the adaptations and solutions that the man has found to homecoming the problems. It starts by saying that the man has, erudite many things, already suggesting that he has changed to fit in. He then explains the things he has learnt. He tells of the false personalities or of his many faces. He tells that he has learnt to wear these faces, suggesting that he wears faces for distinguishable situations. For example, he says he has an, office-face, street-face, and host-face, proving that he acts differently under different circumstances. He then adds that they have, conforming smiles, resembling a fixed portrait. This suggests even more falseness and changes. Poem Stanza Five Learned to put-on With Only His Teeth. Stanza five of the poem tells of the fake attributes to go along with the fake looks. It also repeats some of the acts that were mentioned precedent in the poem. Repetition seems to be a key technique in this poem. He says that he has also, learned to laugh with only his teeth and shakes hands without his heart. This suggests that he has copied the western ways as this is what they did in the beginning in the poem. He then goes even further by saying he has learned to say, good day when he means, Good-riddance and Glad to meet you, without being glad. I think that the man is ashamed of himself and is confessing to his son how far the fake attitudes have developed, he seems to hate what he has done. Stanza six and seven then show the man showing his regret as he says, I want to be what I used to be when I was like you, showing that he wants to be honest and trut hful again.

The Womans Role as the Helper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

The Womans Role as the Helper - Essay ExampleAs the religious experience within the Judeo-Christian cultures has been founded on a philosophy of the inferiority of women, the role of women has been to take a secondary position to men or piece a battle to fight through the stereotypes to become leaders. In a book published in 1917, Helen Bennett wrote that Every demand is made upon the secretarys imagination, her ingenuity, her versatility, her adaptability, her genius. That her shorthand must be rapid and accurate, her typing correct and artistic, her office methods modern and efficient, her knowledge of detail and of her subject matter endless (167). Bennett wrote of nurses, newspaper women, and secretaries, loose them all the roles of helpers, but with an understanding that in those roles they would do the work that made the difference. Women have been working in roles that were defined conceptually as helping roles throughout history. These roles have included those of wife, se cretary, nurse, elementary education teachers, and as love interest. All these roles have had a cultural insinuation as being roles of support to the manly needs so that the male could be free to rule the world in whatever talent his vocation would deem. This role, however, has been always seen as inferior. This has led to lower wages and lower levels of respect for work that has been done. Sexuality-based surmisal in regard to the work place suggests that the main engine of misogyny is the way in which communion has been constructed so that the man is the aggressor and is on top, (while) the woman is passive and is beneath the man (MacKinnon and Siegel 162).

These three strategies which would not work entangle abandonment, acceptance and manipulation. The strategies whic h do not work in the wake of the runaway horse include the fact that they are given more room to expand their basis and thus lead the beau monde from the front. The other strategy that is employed but does not work at all for their sake is to make them sit at important positions within the office environments. Lastly the strategy that is made use of and passive does not work at all is that of finding more subordinates or peers to work along face them so that they can feel comfortable about the same steps by the organization. For instance, a patient can seek legal help through and through the accreditation body. Alternatively, the patient can enjoin the accreditation body, when seeking legal redress from an accredited healthcare organization. Without accreditation and clear cut rules on how healthcare facilities should handle their patients, it would be difficult for a patient to seek legal redress in case something goes wrong. This is because there would be no set benchmarks against which, health care service is measured against. The third role of accreditation in healthcare is statistics, budgeting and government fiscal planning. What this means is that through accreditation, the government is able to hoard up variable data on the current status of the healthcare sector (Sears et al, 2015). For instance, the government can easily collect data from accredited institutions on the prevalence of lifestyle diseases ilk diabetes. It can then act on such data and come up with measures for combating such diseases. The purpose of this paper is to figure out and hit the books about the lives of the women, to the modern concepts of individualism vs. the over-the-hill traditional concepts. Following their identity how they are kept and what happens will all be described in the context of three of the Asian films capital of Red China Opera Blues, Water and Rouge. Three of the films depict more or same the story of women, their loyalty, exemption followed by traditions. Let us take a look and analyze the story with supporting evidence and arguments. A. Peking Opera Blues tell by Tsui Hark Peking Opera Blues is one of the finest films one comes across of 1986 depicting the portrayal of a muliebrity and her loyalty. The world-wides daughter has been much in focus showing her loyalty and bonds with the customs and the traditions. She is always loyal, obeying her arrest, not participating or standing with men and when tagged with betray, she still is on her fathers incline (Tao ma tan, 1986). The directors first bold step was to cast three women in a serious fictional character. It was conflicting as no other director ever casted three women with the leading role other than stupid, foolish or jerk acts. The second step the director took against the traditions was the touching scene of the 2 women but they were not projecting their needs or greed as it was not a uninventive role or image of the women. The third step was the impression people had for them as being women as a symbolisation of a lower status (Tao ma tan, 1986). Analyzing the above movie, what we see is that a woman as a tool to be suppressed, treated as a toy saying yes every now and then to either the right or the wrong. Her freedom lays in the hands of others either husband, his father or his brother, her deci sions are to be taken by a man who is stronger in position and her destine is decided by them. She does not have her identity, feelings, and emotions. She has to be loyal, putting her head in front of a sword if commanded and still the men in these societies do not let them breath in unspoilt air. Quoted by Charlotte Bronte I am not a bird to entangle me I am a human being, free of my will and independence. These people do not let their daughters, mothers, wives or sisters to live independently, with freedom of will, power and expression. They are bound to follow the customs and traditions followed by the society and their revolt leads them to a calamitous life. The overall impact of the movie is reflecting how a positive, loyal, honest and truthful a woman could be. B. Water Directed by Deepa Mehta the film holds the breath of a person to see what actually people do on the other side of the world. The role of the women portrayed in this film is very meek, worthless and a symbol of ones pleasures. The director projected a woman being a worthless wolf when her husband dies and she has to be in a ashram for the rest of her life. The second thing was the forced prostitution. The third thing was the freedom in the end (Water, 2005). This is the male dominating society. Everything runs under his command. The traditions and customs have already do woman a worthless creature, living only to please a man, does his chores and sacrifice for him (Water, 2005).
